Teesalu: Conflict Prevention Must Be the Core of UN’s Work
Yesterday, Acting Undersecretary for Political Affairs Paul Teesalu was in New York at a high-level meeting that focused on sustainable development and peace-building, convened by the President of the UN General Assembly Peter Thomson.
Teesalu reaffirmed in his address that Estonia shares the views of the new UN Secretary General António Guterres: “Conflict prevention and sustainable peace must be at the core of UN’s work. Conflict prevention and peace-building cannot be viewed separately from sustainable development goals, they have to be interconnected,” Acting Undersecretary said.
UN Sustainable Development goals aim to fight against poverty, guarantee good quality of life and access to education and promote good governance that help to prevent causes of conflict. “It is clear that conflict prevention, sustainable development and protection of human rights have to go hand in hand,” Teesalu said.
In the second half of the day, Teesalu met with the Director of the Europe Division of the Department of Political Affairs of the UN, Levent Bilman and the Deputy Director of the Middle East Division, Darko Mocibob.
