Estonian Ambassador to chair UN General Assembly Economic and Financial Committee

01.06.2017

On Wednesday, 31 May, the UN General Assembly elected Sven Jürgenson, the Permanent Representative of Estonia, as the Chair of the UN General Assembly Economic and Financial Committee (the Second Committee). Ambassador Jürgenson shall begin work as the Chair of the Committee at the beginning of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in September.

Estonia would like to be proactive in the UN and we welcome the chance to fill such high-level and responsible role in the UN system. According to Ambassador Sven Jürgenson, as the Chair of the Second Committee, he would like to contribute to the UN development cooperation, development funding, and economic issues. “Estonia would like to be as effective as possible in chairing the Committee. We would also like to take the achievements of Dian Triansyah Djani, the Ambassador of Indonesia who chaired the committee during the 71st Session of the General Assembly, as a basis and take them further,” Jürgenson noted.

Estonia has chaired the UN Second Committee once before, from 2006-2007. During the 61st Session, the Committee was chaired by Ambassador Tiina Intelmann.

The UN General Assembly has six main committees which chairmanships rotate among regional groups. The Estonian Ambassador was elected to the Committee as a representative of the Eastern European countries. The Second Committee deals with development cooperation, development funding and economic issues. As the Chair of the Second Committee, Ambassador Jürgenson will also belong to the General Committee of the General Assembly.

Sven Jürgenson has been the Permanent Representative of Estonia to the UN since August 2015. In 2016, Ambassador Jürgenson was the President of the UNICEF Executive Board and from 2015-2016, Vice-President of the UN Economic and Social Council.

At yesterday’s Session, a new President was elected for the General Assembly. The Foreign Minister of Slovakia Miroslav Lajčák will succeed after the Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji in September.
