Estonian Defence Minister Luik at the UN: peacekeepers are threatened by cyber attacks

Minister of Defence of Estonia Jüri Luik met on 29 April, in New York, with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, and Miroslav Jenča, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs. Luik also took part in the meeting between the biggest contributing countries to UN peacekeeping.

At the meeting with the biggest contributing countries to UN peacekeeping, Minister Luik discussed the key problems with carrying out UN peacekeeping operations, and introduced Estonia’s objectives in applying for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

According to Luik, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, one of Estonia’s objectives would be to place greater emphasis on crisis prevention by the UN, which would save resources and lives.

At the same time, Luik noted that when carrying out peacekeeping missions it is important to provide mission leaders with clear regulations governing the use of military force, which would provide protection for UN Blue Helmets in an increasingly complex security situation and would also allow for the defence of local civilians.
