President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid becomes a co-chair of EWEC movement

29.09.2018

President Kersti Kaljulaid accepts UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres´ invitation to co-chair the High-Level Steering Group for Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) for the next two years.

The role of the co-chair is to advocate for women's, children's and adolescent's health. During her tenure, president Kaljulaid intends to raise awareness of the heroic efforts people globally are making, often working without any institutional support.

"I wish to demonstrate how many good ideas globally there are, already found, already tried but only on the small scale. Ideas which help someone somewhere, waiting to be discovered and upscaled in order to help as many in the world as possible. I hope to provide recognition, but also dissemination of best practices – often it is the same thing. This is how I can personally get something done," president Kaljulaid said.

At the EWEC opening event today in New York president Kaljulaid also shared Estonia's experience on healthcare. „All children should have equal access to quality healthcare without discrimination. Estonia provides health insurance coverage for all children up to the age of 18 years. We find it very important that the provision of health services should first and foremost be based on the interests of the child," president Kaljulaid added. The Head of State gave another example about health insurance coverage for all pregnant women, which is one of the reasons why Estonia's maternal mortality rate is one of the smallest in the world.

Launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2010, EWEC is an unprecedented global movement that mobilizes and intensifies international and national action by governments, multilaterals, the private sector and civil society to address the major health challenges facing women, children and adolescents around the world.
