Statement at the High-Level SDG Action Event on Climate Change and Agenda 2030, March 23, 2017
Statement by Estonia
High-Level SDG Action Event on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Agenda
New York, 23 March, 2017
Thank you, Mr President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Estonia fully aligns itself with the statement delivered by the European Union.
Paris agreement and the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are major achievements for the global community. Agenda 2030 reaffirms the importance of tackling climate change on the pathway towards sustainable development and we consider effective implementation of Paris Agreement to become a driving force for achieving the SDGs.
Estonia completed the ratification process of Paris agreement just before COP 22. As a member of the European Union, we are committed to continue efforts towards our 2020 targets, as well as the ambitious targets established in the EU’s 2030 climate and energy framework.
In order to deliver on our targets and facilitate Estonia’s transition towards low carbon economy, we have developed our national low carbon strategy until 2050 which we expect to adopt in the near future. The strategy contains long- term policy guidelines in the energy, transportation, industry, agriculture, forestry and waste management sectors. A key outcome of the process is to motivate the private sector and the society as a whole to follow in the direction of sustainable development.
In addition, Estonia has recently adopted its first national Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and the action plan which will help the society to be better prepared for, and cope with the impact that may arise as a result of climate change.
Finally, as we continue efforts to transform our country’s economy, we would like to stress the need for enhanced cooperation between all actors, especially in terms of supporting countries particularly vulnerable to the impact of the climate change. We can meet the challenges addressed by Paris agreement and the SDGs only by working together.
